Konrad Wolf

DEFA directing legend - and namesake of the renowned Babelsberg Film University

Konrad Wolf (20.10.1925-7.3.1982), director and screenwriter: Following his studies, Konrad Wolf began his career at the DEFA Studio for Feature Films, where he became the most important and world-renowned GDR director of the 1960s and 1970s and for which he won numerous awards. His regular partners included in particular the authors Karl Georg Engel and Paul Wiens as well as, since his autobiographically tinged "Ich war neunzehn" (1967), Wolfgang Kohlhaase. With a few exceptions, he was also to work firmly with cinematographer Werner Bergmann. Wolf is one of the most important directors of DEFA. With films such as STERNE (1959), DER GETEILTE HIMMEL (1964), ICH WAR NEUNZEHN (1967) and SOLO SUNNY (1978/79), which bring the recent German past and present to the screen, he becomes a recognised artist not only nationally but also internationally.
